The Lonely Mountains

The Lonely Mountain project came to me at a time of complete chaos. During this time both my parents-in-law were suddenly diagnosed with cancer. One day they were living as if life would never end, the next day they were in the hospital for intensive treatment and pumped full of poison. Their lives changed completely and so did ours.

The Lonesome Mountains became a breathing space for me during this time, a time when I needed to become The mountain. The mountain that was safe, stable, strong and calm. I became the mountain for my husband, for our children, for the house, for lunch, for school, for work, for the shoelaces, the smoke alarm, the lights, the refrigerator, the mailbox. The mountain that stood firm for life.

There are times in life when someone else's life has to come first, when someone else's situation needs a mountain.
And the only mountain to be found is you. Even if you falter, even if you stumble, even if you crawl, you must stand up and become a mountain.
To become a mountain for someone else.

Through the lonely mountain project I could become small, sad, lost, happy, silent, empty and dead. But only there. Together with the mountain I could let go and become someone else. Together with the mountain I could build myself up and find new strength and new power.

Together with the mountain I became whole.

The Lonely Mountain project is for anyone who sometimes needs to close the door on themselves and just become a mountain. To become a mountain for someone else. It is a beautiful choice, a free choice. It is a gift that also shapes you, not only as a mountain, but also as a human being.

All prints in The Lonely Mountain project are available in an edition of 25 copies. All are printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag in A3 and A2.
