Leicy Olsborn Björby is a contemporary artist whose work has been described as poetic, personal and playful. She often works conceptually, allowing her art to embrace different aesthetic expressions through a playful approach.
As an artist rooted in printmaking, the process is just as important as the final piece. By blending techniques and allowing concept and context to interact, she aims to create a dialogue between the viewer, the work and the process. Her pieces possess a tactile, material presence, often incorporating found photographs, text, paper, fabric and wooden objects - items that are reused and reimagined. Sometimes the ideas are expressed through a collage, a painting, an installation, sometimes through a pdf, a graphic print, a photograph or a sculpture. Through her work she explores the complex relationships between humanity and nature, identity, emotion and memory.
- My work is about curiosity, questions and connections. The inspiration comes from the totality of my experiences: the things I think, feel, hear and remember, as well as what I see; and I interpret them using a mix of artistic vocabulary in a variety of media. The creative process is important: engaging with the physical tactility of materials, challenging real and painted forms and textures and embracing the magic of transformation. I like to explore the boundaries and the in-between spaces, moving through drawing, painting, and sculpture, in the overlap of figurative and abstract work. This process allows me to explore the nature of reality, both gentle and brutal, and the fragility of the world and our connection to it, all revealed through the language of art.
Through art I discover questions to answers that make me more curious about the complexity and imperfection of life and humanity. I see my art as an exploration and investigation of meaning and meaningfulness, of materials and materiality.
For me, art is a continuous, curious and playful process of juxtaposing contexts and contrasts. It´s a process where I build and rebuild the world, reality, memories and myself, through which new questions, perspectives, relationships, and curiosities take shape.
